The Found Barn, LLC is the realization of a girl's dream to make her community a better place to live. The name is based on a barn found the day the Ericksen-Smith family purchased the twenty-seven acre homestead. The farm was a working cattle farm about twenty years ago, and old fences are hidden by overgrowth. The barn, built from used materials and trees from the surrounding woods, holds the history of a family working together.
Our mission is to maintain the standards of permaculture in order to become a fully sustainable and off-grid farm that works with healthy and happy animals to produce high quality food for the Greater Jackson community. Our longterm goal in fulfilling this mission is to positively impact our community through offering therapeutic and educational farming programs to Jackson County youth. We have begun with small steps to assure we are only as big as our land will allow and our community needs us to be.
During the Fall of 2013 we started a small dairy goat herd to help clear land that has grown up over the years. Through the Spring we concentrated our time in producing great tasting goat milk and perfecting our goat cheese recipe. Going in to our second year, we had our portable chicken coops ready for the Spring flock of heritage breed chickens and turkeys. Our free-range flock has been raised naturally and humanely from start to finish. Entering in to our third spring season, we look forward to adding a few pigs to help with land management and a Jersey calf to begin our cow herd.
It is important to note that while The Found Barn, LLC is not certified as being organic, organic farming methods are used and pride is taken in maintaining transparent farming practices. The Found Barn maintains pesticide-free pastures and plots, provides organic supplemental feed and herbal medicinal needs to our animals, and practices preventative care to optimize the health of both plants and animals. In addition, we maintain the methods of sustainability and permaculture to assure we are minimizing our impact on the earth.
